I’ve become semi-comfortable using tables for layout but I would like to make the move to CSS. I understand the idea of using DIV and SPAN elements and setting the width of them, but beyond this I am not sure where to go…
You will get many suggestions for this. I must disagree with the answerer above though, the YUI library is huge and if you use it to learn I don’t really think you will truly understand what is happening behind the scenes. Of course feel free to have a look.
I myself used this site and the associated mailing list – it’s been running for many years (longer than any other CSS info site) and has a vast collection of knowledge, signing up to the mailing list, or just searching their archives will also be a big help too. Link in sources below.

I highly recommend using Yahoo!’s YUI package. It is very very good. Scroll down to Grids and you will see:

To have the best web design that works pretty well for most browsers, use standards by W3C.
