Are you allowed to put AdSense on Music lyric sites? Is it illegal to have a music lyric site?
Hi,
I have two questions about music lyric sites.
1. Are you allowed to put Google AdSense on music lyric sites? Will they be considered as excessive domains/sub-domains with duplicated contents since there are many lyric sites?
2. Is it even legal to have a music lyric sites? I remember I have read somewhere saying that music lyrics are copyrighted materials while there are also some say that is it public domains and as long as you include the authors it will be fine? Which one is true? Are you allowed to have a lyric sites?
Thanks a lot!

Music copyright holders have begun to take legal actions against lyrics sites, especially ones with ads on them. A quote from AZlyrics.com, which was one of the biggest lyrics sites:
AZLYRICS.COM – LYRICS COPYRIGHT STATEMENT
United States Copyright Law provides the copyright owner and/or their representative with the exclusive right to create, reproduce and distribute derivative works based on copyrighted material. Unless you have received permission from the copyright owner or their representative to distribute the lyrics from their songs, you are in violation of the law.
May 2003 – Azlyrics.com Team was contacted by one of the world’s largest music print publisher “Hal Leonard Corporation”, who exclusively control print rights for more than 6000 of the compositions listed on our website. Publisher demand us to cease and desist from offering these unauthorized lyrics for distribution via our website.
We had no choice but to remove all these lyrics from our site, otherwise AZLyrics.com would be closed.
