The CSS Virginia is more often called the Merrimack as that was its original USS name.
Cameras were relatively new at the time so most often you see drawings of it in the text books.
First reference has some photos of parts of the ship.
Second reference has a photo thought to be of the Dahlgren gun from the Virginia.
As far as I know, there are no pictures of the CSS Virginia either before action or after as it was sunk to prevent capture.
It was not a great leap in naval technology as there were other ironclads before it. The ship that really changed naval warfare was the Monitor. Besides being an ironclad, its rotating gun became the standard for the future, allowing a ship to fire in any direction, not just off the beam as with older ships and the CSS Virginia.
